"Getting what you go after is success, but liking it while you are getting it is happiness." Bertha Damon

Hartley Performance Horses is dedicated to training, showing, breeding, and selling some of the finest horses available on the West Coast, with emphasis in Reining and Working Cowhorse.

The Hartley’s are very thankful to the many owners and clients that have entrusted their horses care and well being in the training, showing, lessons, and clinics they provide.

chuck_09Robert truly believes that the greatest gift you can give to your horse is to find a trainer that can give the best care and training possible. To develop a well trained horse, it is important to find a horse trainer who is a good match for you and your horse.

When starting with a horse, whether a colt or a finished horse for tune-up, Robert practices a hands-on approach, using groundwork to assess the individual horse, and always being mindful of the animal. This process has proven to be successful in encouraging the horse to be receptive to being ridden and properly trained for the chosen discipline and the customer’s goal.

Robert uses a blend of East Coast and West Coast training styles to produce a unique Reiner or Working Cowhorse. When training horses Robert focuses on the maneuvers used in Reining. The skills learned in Reining can be used in all disciplines. For a better understanding of Reining, please read below in the Showing portion of Services.

A variety of programs are offered to suit your training needs.

Services include starting colts, Futurity prospects, and finished horses.

Whether you are a first time competitor, or have a Stallion or Show horse prospect to be trained, the Hartley’s can customize a program to best fit you and your horse.

Associations that the Hartley’s compete within and support: ASHA, AQHA, NRCHA, NRHA, APHA, ABRA, ORHA, NWRCHA, OQHA, NWBC, and WSSH. They travel to events locally and nationwide throughout the year.

What is Reining?

Reining is a judged event designed to show the athletic ability of a ranch type horse in the confines of a show arena. Often called the “Dressage” of Western events, the Reining Horse event is the ultimate blending of horse and rider, combining speed and maneuverability through a series of intricate patterns.

Reining is the most recent addition to the United States Equestrian Team. This is partly due to the excitement that Reining provides for the participant and spectator alike. Across the country Reining events are drawing larger and larger crowds to the premier events. In NRHA competition, contestants are required to run one of eleven approved patterns. Each pattern includes small slow circles, large fast circles, flying lead changes, roll backs, 360 degree spins done in place, and the all to popular and exciting sliding stops that are the hallmark of the reining horse.

Lessons & Clinics

"Self-discovery is the secret ingredient that fuels daring." Grace Lichtenstein

Robert and Stacy Jo are very proud to coach some of the most talented Youth and Non-Pro Riders on the West Coast.

A common mistake seen by Robert is when horse owners ride alone. Riding alone increases the chance that the rider may inadvertently reinforce or create bad habits. The number one benefit to riding with a Professional Trainer is having another pair of eyes. The trainer can demonstrate what you are doing and also show you what you should be doing.

chuck_stacyThe Hartley’s have developed a lesson plan to best help riders go through the discovery process and learn at a much faster pace, while retaining the information from session to session. Through video and instant feedback for the rider, learning is made just that much easier.

Stacy Jo is very passionate about how each client learns and enjoys developing a strategy for each Team Member (Client) to accomplish their individual goals while having fun and enjoying the whole experience.

On Friday Nights the Hartley’s Host what they call their Friday Night Ride. From 4 to 7 pm Robert and Stacy Jo work with riders as a group and individually. Anyone that would like to haul their horse in is invited. Hartley’s just ask that you call in advance. 503.798.1076

Private and group riding lessons are offered as well as clinics in small and large settings. This includes Cattle Clinics. Hartley Performance Horses LLC does not maintain any lesson horses at this time.
